A BRIEF HISTORY
The Library of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada was established in 1950 in Mangkubumen Yogyakarta under the name of the UGM Physics Library. In 1960 the Physics Library was moved to Sekip Unit III Yogyakarta and changed its name to the Library of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FNS UGM). Starting December 28, 1982 the name of FNS UGM was changed to the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FMNS UGM) which is valid until now.
FACILITIES
Circulation Service
Circulation service is open for library members where they can choose the books that they need. This service is already automated.
References Service
References services is an open system are intended for all library visitors. The visitors can only read the books in the references service in the library (borrowing the books is not allowed) or print a copy of some part of the books (for backup books and journals). For undergraduate and master thesis, dissertations, and research reports are not allowed to be copied except for certain pages.
Reading Room
The reading room is in the reference room. In the room, there is a collection of backup books, undergraduate thesis or final assignment report, master thesis, dissertations, journals, magazines and newspapers.
Lounge Room
Lounge room is an open space located in the middle of the library. This is a space where students can do various activities, such as studying, accessing the internet access, discussing with their peers and so on.
Wi-Fi Area
In the library, visitors can connect to the internet using Wi-Fi, so that visitors with their own gadgets such as laptops can take advantage of this facility.
Computer to Search for References
There are 4 computers for searching text books, undergraduate and master thesis using web-based Library Information System software which can be accessed via http:/www.mipa.ugm.ac.id/ or direct access to 10.31.1.55/digilib/ (Local UGM).
Computer to Access the Internet
There are 8 computers provided for students to access the internet.
Canteen
The faculty also has a canteen that provides various menu.
Mosque (Mushola)
The library is also close to the faculty’s mosque.
THE REFERENCE COLLECTION
The reference collection held by the library is adjusted to the existing majors in the faculty. Most of the collections are in the fields of mathematics, physics, engineering, chemistry and computers. As of July 2010, the number of collections in the FMNS library is as follows:
- Books: 9,087 titles, 19,500 exemplars
- National Journals: 71 titles,379 exemplars
- International Journals: 316 titles,25,119 exemplars
- Magazines: 162 titles,997 exemplars
- Research Report: 827 titles,1,128 exemplars
- Undergraduate Thesis: 9,158 Titles,9,158 exemplars
- Master Thesis:773 title,773 exemplars
- Dissertation: 29 titles, 33 exemplars
MEMBERSHIP
Library membership is available for FMNS students, teaching staff, and employees. The requirements to become a member, especially for students are:
- Provide your student ID
- Submit 2 passport photos:
o Size 3 X 4. 1 sheet
o Size 2 X 3. 1 sheet
- Membership is free of charge
Students who have already registered will get a library membership card that is valid for one academic year and can be extended for the following year.
Visitors from outside FMNS UGM can only read on the spot or ask the library staff to copy parts of the book, by registering first.
OPEN HOURS
- Monday to Thursday : 08:00-15:30
- Friday : 08:00-14:30
- Saturday : 08:00-12:00
CODE OF CONDUCT
- Visitors fill out the library guest book.
- Visitors are expected to present a membership card or reading card.
- Bags, folders, printed books, jackets, foods, and drinks are not allowed inside the library. Visitors may bring in items of value.
- Visitors are not allowed to smoke in the library.
CONDUCT IN BORROWING BOOKS
- Backup books (there is only one copy or the first copy) can be borrowed overnight i.e., borrowed one hour before closing and returned no later than 09:00 the next day. One person may borrow up to 3 books.
- Circulation books (second copy and so on) can be borrowed for 2 weeks and can be extended 1 time. Students may borrow a maximum of 4 books.
- For students who are in the process of writing a thesis/dissertation, they may borrow up to 6 books from the circulation service for a period of 2 weeks which can be extended 1 time and a maximum of 4 backup books overnight. For this purpose, students must submit a priority application letter signed by their supervisor.
